Kala-Azar, a virulent form of leishmaniasis, has killed some 40 000 people in southern Sudan, say WHO officials. The figures are more conservative than the estimated 60 000 deaths reported last week. Philippe Desjeux, head of WHO’s leishmaniasis control programme, says some 300 000 people in the Western Upper Nile region are at risk from the parasites, which are spread by sandflies. Successful treatment depends on early diagnosis. Desjeux says the catastrophic death rate in Sudan is due to the collapse of the health infrastructure due to war,
