Researchers' rights

THE lot of contract researchers was improved last week when universities and major research sponsors signed a concordat to give them some of the benefits enjoyed by permanent staff, including maternity rights and sick pay. The concordat also granted contract researchers the right to proper assessment and career guidance, and universities will be encouraged to be frank with researchers who have no prospect of gaining a permanent post. Almost half of all British researchers are on short-term contracts and the number has grown rapidly over the past decade. A separate but comparable agreement is now being worked out with charities, which also fund many researchers. They have not signed the concordat because many operate under mandates which prevent them from spending money on “incidental work costs” such as sick pay,
